Low carbon business

Growing gas, advancing new energy solutions
OMV Norge AS contributes to the OMV Group strategy by creating economic options through exploration, business development, and new energy solutions. In Norway, our focus is on growing gas and selectively advancing renewables, supporting the transition to a more sustainable energy system.
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
OMV is actively developing Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) solutions in Norway, with two licenses awarded to date:
- Poseidon license – awarded in April 2023 in partnership with Aker BP ASA. The license could provide injection capacity of more than 5 million tons of CO2 per year. OMV holds a 50% interest.
- Iroko license – awarded in June 2024 in partnership with Vår Energi and Lime Petroleum. The license could provide injection capacity of around 7.5 million tons of CO2 per year. OMV holds a 30% interest.
These projects reflect OMV’s commitment to developing scalable, long-term solutions for industrial decarbonization and contribute to the Group’s broader ambitions in the low-carbon space.
Power from renewable sources
OMV also contributes to low-carbon operations through its participation in producing assets that utilize renewable electricity:
- Edvard Grieg receives power from shore via the Norwegian grid, as does the Gudrun field via Sleipner.
- Gullfaks receives renewable power from the Hywind Tampen floating wind farm, with an effective capacity of 88 MW.
These initiatives help reduce operational emissions and support Norway’s high environmental standards.
Responsible transformation
OMV Norge AS supports the Group’s ambition to diversify gas sources to Europe and to increase the share of gas as a transition fuel to around 60% of the production portfolio by 2030. As a safe and reliable gas supplier, we are proud to contribute to a responsible transformation and to the development of a lower-emission energy mix.
