OMV Social Responsibility Newsletter

As part of our commitment to social responsibility, OMV invests into a better life for people and communities around our business operations. OMV social and community investments focus on four key areas:

  • tackling climate change
  • making our neighboring communities grow
  • creating opportunities for people
  • protecting nature and people

In the first half of 2019 our investments contributed to accessible healthcare, improvements in social infrastructure, forestation, and creating employment opportunities for people from difficult backgrounds.

EUR 10 mn to build the First Children’s Oncologic Hospital in Romania

Currently one in two children with cancer die in Romania due to lack of pediatric infrastructure. OMV Petrom contributed EUR 10 mn to support the construction of the First Children’s Oncologic Hospital. It is the largest single company donation in Romanian history.

EUR 4.6 mn in social investments in Libya for local communities

OMV committed a total of EUR 4.6 mn in social investments to address the social challenges in neighboring communities by signing an MoU in 2019 spring, with its partners in Libya and the National Oil Corporation (NOC). Funds will improve access to medical services and water and create opportunities for the youth, reaching over 0.5 mn beneficiaries.

Protecting and growing forests in New Zealand

Protecting the environment, including planting native trees to offset carbon emissions, is a priority for all New Zealanders and our local OMV team. We won a World Environment Day challenge, planting 380 trees in just two hours, planted 200 native plants at one of our sites and another 100 trees as part of our Paper4Trees community sponsorship – a waste minimization and tree planting program for schools and preschools that encourages children to recycle.

Employment for underprivileged youth in Serbia
New mentee joined OMV Serbia for 10 month period through “Skill up Your Future” project. The project employs young people from difficult backgrounds in OMV filling stations to help them get a successful start into working life. Professional tutors from our partner CARITAS support the youngsters throughout their time at OMV.

Supporting access to healthcare for people in poverty in Austria

More than 1.2 mn people in Austria are acutely at risk of poverty – more than 400,000 of them are children. OMV supports CAPE 10 by establishing a low-threshold ambulance for women and children. In June, 10 OMV volunteers helped run a fundraising Street Festival to raise more funds for the CAPE 10 House of the Future and Social Innovation.

Growing the next generation of tech-savvy women in Austria

60 girls learned more about different career paths in technical professions visiting OMV’s operations in Austria (Upstream, Head Office and the Schwechat Refinery) during the Girls Day initiative this May.

OMV Group

OMV produces and markets oil and gas, innovative energy and high-end petrochemical solutions – in a responsible way. With Group sales of EUR 23 bn and a workforce of more than 20,000 employees in 2018, OMV Aktiengesellschaft is one of Austria’s largest listed industrial companies. In Upstream, OMV has a strong base in Romania and Austria as part of the Central and Eastern Europe core region as well as a balanced international portfolio, with Russia, North Sea, Middle East and Africa as well as Asia-Pacific as further core regions. 2018 daily production stood at approximately 427,000 boe/d. In Downstream, OMV operates three refineries with a total annual processing capacity of 17.8 mn tons and more than 2,000 filling stations in ten countries. OMV runs gas storage facilities in Austria and Germany; its subsidiary Gas Connect Austria GmbH operates a gas pipeline network in Austria. In 2018, gas sales volumes amounted to around 114 TWh. Sustainability is an integral part of the corporate strategy. OMV is set to invest EUR 500 mn in innovative energy solutions by 2025.
